Chris Samuels is staying with the Washington Redskins for a few more month as a coaching intern.
The 6-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle finally retired on Thursday after suffering his third career-numbing hit on Oct. 11 at Carolina. Stenosis of the spine, first noticed in high school, finally convinced Samuels to retire after 10 seasons. Otherwise, he risked paralysis.
“I received my miracle when I got off the field in North Carolina,” Samuels said. “It’s going to hard to walk away from the game from I love.”
At least Samuels walks away from the game and into coaching under an NFL internship program. He’ll shadow Redskins coaches in making the transition. Whether Samuels eventually coaches high schoolers, college players or pros is irrelevant. Samuels does plan to stay in the Washington area.
“It really doesn’t matter. I just want to coach,” he said. “I’m 32 years old. I gotta do something. I can’t sit around the house all day. “
