The story in Ashburn Virginia so far this NFL free agency is nothing. No big name free agents. No splashing signings. No headlines scrolling across the bottom of the ESPN page. Twelve hours into free agency the Redskins have done exactly zero.
That is a story in itself.
In the midst of the first uncapped year since 1993, and following the epic purge of 11 players yesterday (if you count Chris Samuels’ retirement), most expected big things from Redskins Park today. Instead, fans have been treated only to the news that two offensive tackles are scheduled in at some point. And the headlines tell us that this year’s top talents are being courted by other teams, some even in the division.
So what are fans to make of this so far? Is this a result of more players being restricted, with those who are not being overpriced? Or, does this demonstrate a new approach by the Redskins? One that is more focused on targeted talent and less concerned with the shiniest toy on the shelf?
If it is the latter we writers are going to have to find a new template when writing about Washington in the offseason. And agents are going to have to find another team to say is interested in their clients in order to raise the price.
One thing’s for certain; Vinny Cerrato is probably right now sitting somewhere imagining what he could have done with Dan Snyder’s money in an uncapped year.
Then again things could change in the next few hours with numerous signings.
At least we’ll know how to write about it…
